AGD Foundation

Accomplishments

The 2005–2006 Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) Foundation Annual Report lists the names of more than 1,000 individuals and corporations that contributed to the Foundation since the inception of the “Fostering a Brighter Tomorrow” capital campaign in 2004.

The report highlights the efforts of the AGD Foundation due to the generous support of its contributors. A brief description of those activities follows:

Education

  • Educational seminars and symposia at the national and regional levels presented by GlaxoSmithKline, Hufford Financial, Nobel Biocare, Perio Institute, and Procter & Gamble.
  • Online continuing education (CE) programs produced by GC America and OraPharma.
  • A student manual created with the support of Dentist’s Advantage designed to guide students through the transition from school to practice.

Assistance and Support

  • Financial assistance for AGD members in Louisiana and Mississippi affected by Hurricane Katrina.
  • Support for the Louisiana State University School of Dentistry and its transition to the Baton Rouge Campus.

Grants

  • SmileLine, dentistry’s first national hotline, for an event to answer consumer questions.
  • Texas Academy of General Dentistry for the Lance Armstrong Foundation & Sports Expo Oral Cancer Screening.
  • Pennsylvania Academy of General Dentistry to upgrade KidzGrinz, a Web site for children, their parents, educators, and advocates.
  • Massachusetts Dental Society to distribute dental health information focused on oral health beginning at birth.

Access to Care

  • Special Olympics and the AGD Foundation work together to improve the health and access to health care for Special Olympic athletes and the broader population of individuals with intellectual disabilities.
  • 400 AGD members volunteered for inclusion in the Special Olympics Special Smiles® Online Provider Directory to provide fee-based health care for special athletes, their families, and their caregivers.
  • Supporting Special Olympics volunteers for oral pre-screenings.

AGD Foundation Grants
2001-2006

More than $168,600 has been awarded by the AGD Foundation between 2001 and 2006 to fund dental access programs that help make dental care and oral health literacy available to underserved populations, and educational programs that enhance the general dentist’s ability to serve the aged, the physically and mentally challenged, and children, particularly those whose economic circumstances place them at risk.
