Dental Implant Training: What You Need to Know to Plan a Course

  Printer-Friendly Version

Courses that offer dental implant training continue to be in high demand. As a result, there’s a huge volume of information available and it isn’t always clear what should be included in a given course.

So many Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) members asked about what they should look for in an implant training course that the AGD formed an Implantology Task Force in February 2009. This Task Force was comprised of nine general practitioners with substantial dental implant experience. This group worked to develop guidelines for planning or researching dental implant therapy courses.

These guidelines, titled Educational Objectives for the Provision of Dental Implant Therapy by Dentists, are not intended to define a specific curriculum, but rather to help providers develop a course that will prepare dentists—regardless of generalization or specialization—to provide safe and appropriate dental implant therapy.

Dental implant therapy can be successfully accomplished by all licensed dentists who have received adequate training. No manufacturer, university, hospital, or continuing education (CE) provider should limit any licensed dentist from having access to the specific knowledge base or materials needed to provide quality care through the provision of dental implant therapy.
